Al enige tijd volg ik een nieuwsgroup van een fantasy schrijfster: Robin hobb aka Megan Lindholm aka… naja geen idee hoe ze echt heet. Hierin las ik in het ‘Archive’ een ouder bericht wat ze vorig jaar geplaatst had. Na mijn bezoek aan Las Vegas vorig jaar kan ik het met dit bericht eigenlijk alleen maar eens zijn:

Hundreds and hundreds of bicycles. No helmet law. Lots of canals, in the city and in the country. No tall chain link fences to keep cars, kids or cows from falling into them. Not even fences to keep the animals 'X' number of feet back from the water to protect the delicate wetlands environment. Lots of small cars getting great gas mileage. "Why can't we have those in the US?" I asked Fred. He speculated that they wouldn't pass our crash standards. I wondered if they could sustain freeway speeds. In all of the above, there are some assumptions about Americans, I think. That we are likely to either crash our bicycles, or run over bicyclists. That without safety fences, we will fall into water. (Even American cows, I think, might be stupider than Dutch ones?) That our cars have to be strong so we can crash them into walls and each other. And that all of us will drive long distances on freeways. Or, I wonder, does it have something to do with how often we sue each other and what we are allowed to sue about? Oh, well. Just a minor grumble for the day. Robin
Ik heb ook de indruk dat amerikanen dom zijn, dat ze zelf niet in staat zijn tot nadenken en dat ze alleen durven te rijden in veel te grote auto’s (sarcasm)… Blijkbaar realiseert een enkeling dat daar ook 
Toch vreemd dat een “land” zich op deze manier heeft ontwikkeld, zit er dan toch een bron van waarheid in?
PS: De boeken van Robin Hobb zijn een aanrader als je tenminste een beetje van Fantasy houdt 
Goed ik kan er dus niet veel van maar het plaatje is toch duidelijk 
Vorige week heb ik voor het eerst mijn vriendin een heel weekend lang meegekregen naar een LAN-party!
Een dag later besloot ik mijn DVD Collectie weer eens na te lopen… Gezien het in Nederland ‘legaal’ is/was om een dvd voor eigen gebruik te kopiëren heb ik door de jaren een flinke verzameling opgebouwd (Ik heb zelf ook een stapel orginelen maar als ik eerlijk ben moet ik toch toegeven dat ik meer DVD+R’s heb als geperste orginele schijfjes). Ze zitten allemaal in genummerde dozen en gister was het weer eens tijd om de database aan te vullen… Ik had alweer een hele poos niets nieuws ingevoerd en toch heb ik de laatste tijd aardig wat DVD’s en blue-ray disks gekocht.
